There has always been a synergy between recordings of the past and hip hop as we know it today. While hip hop certainly is not the only genre to sample excerpts from jazz, funk, rock and soul records, it has been inextricably linked, dating back to its origins. While much of the sampling consisted of looping segments of popular records for DJ’s to provide soundscapes at parties; as time progressed, aspiring creators opted to seek out more and more obscure records to sample from. Finding rare records was not enough; chopping the sample and resequencing them unlocked new creative possibilities. Much like a good jigsaw puzzle, there is a fun challenge in putting the sample pieces together to create a new melody. Time stretching, repitching, reversing, filtering, compressing; the options are endless in creating a new sound from a relic from the past.

Introducing The Reset Series: Vol. 1. Featuring renowned sampling producers 14KT, Dibiase, The Kount, Ohbliv, Freddie Joachim, and Elaquent, taking music from the catalog of Notes On A Journey, and reimagining these songs into hip hop art.
